Don't beat yourself up - we are only human

You can have either excuses or results – but being human, we sometimes need both.

Have you ever noticed how difficult it is sometimes to get in to the habit of managing your money? As many of you know who have read my book Financial Fitness for Beginners www.financialfitnessbooks.com, the core theme is to consistently keep an eye on your finances…i.e. what you are spending, what you are saving and your changing net worth. It is all about you being in control.

Of course, this is easier said than done, as I can attest to. My intention to support my readers and those that are working towards financial peace of mind, is to do a weekly blog (such as this) with helpful and encouraging tips Additionally, I do a monthly newsletter for those that have asked to receive it. To act almost like a personal money “coach” to keep you on track.

Well, in reality, I’ve been remiss these past two months. I do have lots of valid excuses….cyclone in Fiji which hit our sailboat, returning from Fiji, Christmas holidays, new grandbaby, houseguests and some health issues. Yes, all good excuses – however, that end result is that I didn’t do what I should have been doing. Has this ever happened to you?

Human nature is such that as we put off doing something, it becomes easier to keep coming up with excuses rather than getting on with the goal at hand. This happens a lot with diets. One day you eat a piece of cake and then often throw in the towel and go completely off the diet. What is the answer once you have fallen off the wagon – be it your diet or your financial management?

Simply to take the one small step and begin again.

If you have started my 12 week program and got sidetracked at Week 3….don’t give up. Don’t beat yourself up and whatever you do – don’t stop! Simply acknowledge that other priorities took over in the past and begin again today. Just do one small thing and you’ll be surprised how taking this action will trigger you to keep doing your one small step each day.

We are all human and life is not one boring straight line. We have to take the zigs and zags of life, but as long as we keep putting one foot in front of the other, we will make it to our destination.

Wishing you great success on your journey.
